Once the domain of solo dyers operating out of their home kitchens, handpainted yarns have slowly been making inroads into the mainstream. Today, your LYS may readily stock the bright, beautiful colors of Lorna's Laces, Madelinetosh, or Malabrigo, to name just a few.

In May, the venerable Rowan is finally tossing its hat into the ring with a handpainted sock yarn called Fine Art. The concept isn't new, but the execution definitely is. They've chosen a completely unique combination of fibers and a worthy crew to do the dyeing. Here's a sneak peek at Fine Art.

Upcoming Events
The fiber festival season officially kicks off this Saturday with the 104th-annual Connecticut Sheep, Wool, and Fiber Festival, taking place rain or shine at the Tolland Agricultural Center in Vernon, Connecticut. That same weekend in Wales, the 7th-annual Wonderwool Wales takes over the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. Not to be outdone, the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival is May 4-5 at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, an easy drive from Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Belle of the Bale
We've been having a ball over at the Great White Bale. Last week, we watched our first batch of yarn get spun on the last commercially operating spinning mule in this country. Up next, we'll have an unofficial meet-up on Saturday, May 4th, at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. Join us from 12:15 to 12:45pm on the grassy slope facing the sheep-shearing stage.
