Knitter's Review

Ruth's sweater

Few countries have as prominent or distinct a knitting culture as Iceland.

When my grandparents traveled to this island country years ago, my grandma immediately fell in love with Icelandic yarn. It wasn't tightly twisted like the yarns she was used to—in fact it was barely spun at all.

She brought home a whole suitcase of yarn and proceeded to knit sweaters for herself and everyone dear to her.

In just a few weeks I'll board a plane for Iceland, bringing my grandma's favorite cardigan back to the country of its origins. Please join me in a monthlong celebration of all things Iceland, beginning with a look at the distinct yarn that captivated my grandma so many years ago: Lopi.

Next weekend in Maine
Driving down to Portland this week, I saw the first brilliant-red sugar maples. Fall is coming soon. The conditions are perfect for a road-trip up the Maine coast to Searsport, where the Fiber College of Maine is set to take place this Thursday through Sunday. It couldn't be more photogenic, in an old-fashioned campground just steps from Penobscot Bay. There will be vendors and plenty of classes on everything from painting silk to knitting your own pair of mini-Latvian mittens.
