For those of you who exchange gifts with your knitting friends at this time of year, December's here and the clock is ticking. Fortunately, you can give a knitter many things besides a finished project or even yarn. Let me offer some suggestions.

Heifer Fundraiser
The arrival of December also marks our ninth year of supporting Heifer International. The organization helps people around the world obtain a sustainable source of food and income. If you find yourself in a position of even modest abundance this year, I encourage you to join me in contributing to this worthy cause.

Last-Minute Gift Pattern Ideas
If your fingers are still eager to cast on a gift, I have three fast-knitting ideas: Kat Coyle's Nomad Hat and Scarf, which uses only 300 yards of chunky yarn; Leigh Radford's Knitted Rose Pins; or Ann Budd's decadent Brioche Gaiter knit from baby camel fiber.

In the Forum: Holding Yarn
Hilma needs some advice about tensioning her yarn. She holds it in her left hand, and she's tired of dropping and rewinding the yarn around her fingers several times as she works across each row. Do you know of any gadgets or shortcuts that could help?
