Knitter's Review
May 20, 2010
a room with a view

Just as surfers seek the perfect wave, wool people are always on the hunt for the perfect fiber source. Last fall, I finally found mine.

I'd been signing books at Rhinebeck for several hours when a tall, distinguished-looking man in a weathered barn jacket appeared at my table. "My name is Eugene Wyatt," he said, holding out his hand, "and I raise one of the largest flocks of Saxon Merino sheep in the United States."

His farm is just 60 miles north of New York City, and every Saturday he trucks his wares—from fresh sausages to billowing hanks of extraordinarily soft yarn—to the Greenmarket in Union Square. It's my turn to introduce Eugene and his Catskill Merino to you.

Farm Weekend in New York
The Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, New York, hosts its first-ever Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair this Saturday from 10am-5pm. There's a full schedule of demonstrations and hands-on activities including sheep shearing, carding, dyeing, spinning, and weaving, plus sheep herding demonstrations and a llama obstacle course.

In the Forum: Summer Goals?
Minh has asked a marvelous question: What knitted projects would you like to tackle this summer? (And if you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you can play along with, "This winter I would like to...") I'd like to finish my nephew's baby blanket before his first birthday. And you?
