Knitter's Review
March 4, 2010
one lump or two?

Until last year, few knitters could locate Haapsalu on a map much less pronounce the word "nupp" correctly. Nancy Bush changed all that with her book, Knitted Lace of Estonia.

Once the knitters of Haapsalu realized that the world was listening, they came together and created their own book about their knitting tradition. The English translation of that book, The Haapsalu Shawl, is now available in North America. It weighs three pounds, is the size of a MacBook, and costs the equivalent of 20 lattes. What's up?

Prada Plays with Cables
Fashion designer Miuccia Prada has just previewed her Fall/Winter 2010 women's collection. In it, she gave a generous and intriguing nod to knitted textiles. Not only did her collection feature a few bulky cabled cardigans, but it also made abundant use of knee-socks emblazoned with contrasting cables running up the front of the leg. I look forward to seeing how this might be adapted for handknitting, and by whom. Maybe you?

This Weekend in Portland
Did you know that there are 16 yarn stores in and around the Portland, Oregon area? I did not—but this weekend, from Friday to Sunday, they're all hosting a Yarn Crawl. Visit the Yarn Crawl Web site to see a map of participating stores and find out more about the scavenger hunt, raffle, and special promotions.
