Knitter's Review
February 18, 2010
a bowl of novelty

Novelty yarns are the mortgage-backed securities of the yarn world. When the yarn market began to contract a few years ago, many companies were left with warehouses of flashy, shiny, furry, 100% synthetic and entirely unsellable stuff. They took huge losses and vowed never to repeat the same mistake again.

This may help explain why many people in the knitting industry are extremely weary of anything that could be remotely construed as "novelty."

But this week I show you an exception, a lovely and somewhat unconventional ribbon-style yarn that's made from 80% wool and hand-dyed by Mountain Colors in Montana. Meet Merino Ribbon.

Next Weekend in California
Stitches West is coming to the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California from February 25th to the 28th. Have you registered for classes yet? There's still room to learn from the likes of Karen Alfke, JC Briar, Beth Brown Reinsel, Edie Eckman, Barry Klein, Melissa Leapman, Sandi Rosner, and Jane Slicer Smith. And, as always, the massive Stitches marketplace will be open from Friday to Sunday as well.

As always, I thank you for your readership and your support.

Happy knitting, and I'll see you in the Forums!
