  Knitters today have it easy. If we want to start a project, we can simply go to the store, buy yarn, and get started.
But not too long ago we had to raise, feed, shelter, and shear our sheep (or plant, tend, harvest, and prepare the flax), clean and comb the wool, spin and ply the yarn, and then wash, bleach, or dye it before we could knit even one stitch.
Each step required its own set of tools, many of which are almost identical to those available today.

This week begins a monthlong exploration of yarn-handling tools with a close-up look at the niddy noddy. More than just a funny-sounding term, this implement is an essential tool for handspinners.
