What kind of person endures a two-hour traffic jam to reach a fairgrounds that's crammed with thousands of people on a day when the temperatures are in the 90s, the humidity is staggering, and the pollen is leaving a faint yellow dust on all surfaces—to fondle wool, no less?

Dedicated fiber festival folks, that's who. I was among the woolheads at the 37th annual Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival last weekend and have plenty of pictures for you.

More Festivals This Weekend
It's festival season! This weekend brings the Shepherd's Harvest Sheep and Wool Festival at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Lake Elmo, Minnesota; and the New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival at the Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Contoocook, just 90 minutes from Boston. Both events offer all the beloved trappings of a real sheep and wool festival, with plentiful vendors, workshops, and demonstrations galore.

In the Forum: Woolalonging
Since February, an intrepid group of wool-sniffers and I have been enjoying our Knitter's Book of Wool woolalong. We've moved from Cormo to Bluefaced Leicester and Targhee, and this month we shift our focus to Icelandic wool.
