Knitter's Review
May 27, 2004

cosmos in budPicture this: a group of people on an island, sitting around a bonfire, voting on who gets to stay and who must leave. But instead of being judged on their ability to build a shelter or skin a squirrel, their survival depends on whether or not they can fashion an entire wardrobe out of a large ball of twine.

It's a new reality show in the works from CBS, in which 12 contestants will live under one roof while competing to become America's new diva of domesticity.

Meanwhile, the Do It Yourself Network will premiere a new series on knitting, called the Knitty Gritty, starting July 2 at 10am ET. According to a press release, host Vickie Howell is a "young, hip crafter" who will be joined by "knitsters" who tackle projects such as a "groovy guitar strap," baby "Ugg" boots, and a tote knit entirely from recycled grocery bags.

Although this tells me that the new knitting balloon clearly hasn't burst, I'm craving continuity with knitting tradition. That's exactly what I find in this week's book review: a beautiful example of knitting classicism from the Green Mountain Spinnery.

Also New This Week

In the Boutique: Secret Sale on Limoges
Offered as collectibles in the boutique, our Limoges porcelain boxes would be a lovely adornment on your mantelpiece or dresser. Each is handpainted and signed by the artist in Limoges, France. This week, I've marked all three designs down by 20 percent. Supplies are limited, I'm only announcing the sale here, and when they're gone, they're gone.

In the Forums: Knitting Cafés?
Combination yarn shops and coffee houses/tea rooms are cropping up all around the country. Do you have a favorite recommendation?
