Knitter's Review December 18, 2003
|
The Australian yarn industry has grown by leaps and bounds since I first began tracking it more than three years ago.
Although forerunner Jo Sharp moved production to Italy, Heirloom Yarns has continued to feed the country with innovative and cost-effective products.
Online startups The Wool Shack and Ozeyarn symbolize a new era in online yarn shopping Down Under.
This week I introduce a new independent yarn startup based in Victoria, Australia, the Rare Yarns Company. The company's focus is on quality natural fibers from rare and unusual breeds, with all materials grown and produced in Australia and New Zealand. (http://knittersreview.com/goto.asp?goto=RYC)
Also New This Week
If you're like me, you have several projects going at once, each in its own separate bag. Why not wipe the slate clean for 2004 with a brand new KR signature tote? To help you make the decision, I've marked them down by 10% until December 24. (http://www.knittersreview.com/goto.asp?goto=KRTote)
Forums: Career Chat
What do our careers have to do with our knitting? Nothing and everything. In reviewing a recent thread about what we do to afford our yarn habit, I was struck by the depth and breadth of our daily income-generating activities.
It dawned on me that the forums could be a useful vehicle for networking with one another about career choices, advice, and opportunities. That's why I've launched an entirely new topic section dedicated to career talk. (http://www.knittersreview.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=90)
Year-End Gift and Challenge
My December newsletter subscriber giveaway is to you all: The gift of a sheep to the Heifer Foundation on behalf of the Knitter's Review community.
Last December I did the same thing, and many of you expressed a desire to join in the contribution. One month later we'd collected nearly $1,300, which translated into four llamas and six sheep for deserving families around the world.
If you would like to join us again this year, you can send a check or money order (payable to Heifer International), in whatever amount you can afford, to:

As always, thank you for your readership. Happy knitting, and I'll see you in the forums!
