Knitter's Review July 24, 2003

Repetition doesn't always foster originality. The more one produces, the harder it can be to keep things truly new and unusual.
Knitwear designers are under constant pressure to create refreshing new looks that fit within a set brand image. One such designer is Debbie Bliss, who has given us dozens upon dozens of children's and adult patterns over the years.
Some critics say that her designs are becoming indistinguishable from one another. This week I got my hands on her new book and put this argument to the test.
New This Week
If you're new to knitting and want to start small, Debbie Bliss' new book may be for you. The only question is, how different is the book from all her others?
New Card in the Boutique
When my cat Casey crawled into my half-finished Chamonix sweater and fell sound asleep, I knew that a KR card was born. The result is Sweet Dreams, our newest notecard addition.
KR Retreat Update
It's official, all overnight spaces in our second-annual Knitter's Review Retreat (November 7-9 in Syria, Virginia) are booked. But there's still plenty of room for you to join us for the Saturday portion of the retreat.
In the Forums: Clarifying Copyrights
In the latest edition of Vogue Knitting, Trisha Malcolm dedicates her editorial to a discussion of copyright laws as they relate to knitting patterns. She writes that we can't make and sell a knitted item using someone else's pattern. Do you agree?

July Prize
At the beginning of this year we made a collective donation to the Heifer Project. This month I'm continuing the tradition by donating five "shares" of a sheep to the Heifer Project on behalf of one lucky newsletter subscriber. To put yourself in the running, simply stay subscribed to this newsletter.
As always, thank you for your readership. Happy knitting, and I'll see you in the forums!
