Knitter's Review
July 26, 2002

a single pink peony against white angoraI can't believe that the next time I write this it'll be August. Where has summer gone?

I barely got any knitting done this month. The highlight was a beautiful little pillow I knit for a dear friend going into the hospital for major surgery.

I stuffed it with silk, cashmere, camel down, sprigs of fresh lavender, and other special materials I thought might impart good luck. The surgery was a success, and I was comforted knowing that a part of me was there through her recovery.

Knitters possess a marvelous gift. We can turn a seemingly insignificant piece of string into a beautiful object whose meaning deepens with age. This month I felt particularly grateful for that gift.

New This Week
Morehouse Farm Merino was immortalized in Melanie Falick's "Knitting in America" and Candace Eisner Strick's "Sweaters from New England Sheep Farms." Yet when I first saw the farm's lace-weight yarn, I thought it was a spinning experiment gone awry. How did it knit up? We find out.
