August 9, 2001

I was prepared to give this week's yarn a glowing review. It looked great, felt good, and knit up effortlessly. But then I pulled the swatches out of the wash and lay them out to dry.

The Discovery

What had been cheerful chunky squares were now undeniably slanted, rather like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. How did this happen?

Does my washing machine possess mysterious powers? Will people flock to my house from around the world to witness the Miracle of the Tilted Swatch?

Sadly, no. But you might want to read this week's yarn review to learn how you can keep this from happening to you.

McTague Takes On Toddlers

There's a new children's book on the market. It has brilliant colors, large pictures, easy-to-read text, and cheerful watercolor illustrations. Is it a fairy tale? No, it's a new collection of knitting patterns from Rowan designer Fiona McTague. Read more about it in this week's book review.
